Taming of the Shrew

July 6 – July 30

Setting: Elizabethan England – with a twist

“I see a woman may be made a fool/If she had not a spirit to resist.” Come see a gender-swapped take on Will’s original battle of wills, reversing traditional hierarchies to breathe new life into the Shrew you thought you knew. Kate and Petruchio-- equals in intellect, impudence, and perhaps even infatuation-- learn to balance identity and belonging, with plenty of sniping, head-butting, and comic brilliance along the way.

This production, directed by our very own Artistic Director, Caitlin Lowans combines the bard’s iconic comedy with an updated concept—lovingly borrowed from the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 2020 production--that reimagines Elizabethan power dynamics to put women on top. Featuring all the mad-cap physical comedy, and quick-witted word play we love in Shakespeare’s comedies, Theatreworks’ production frames the story through new eyes to ask, who’s really taming whom?
